If you have always tended to assume that kitchens have to use tiles as splashbacks, think again. Today coloured glass splashbacks are one of the most popular new ways to not only create a more hygienic kitchen, but also create a kitchen that feels warmer, cleaner, bigger, lighter and more themed. There are several problems with tiles, despite there being a wide selection available.
Tiles are difficult to fix into place, taking a great deal of time. Lining tiles up takes skill, practise and time, and when it comes to awkward corners, holes for pipes and odd shaped areas, it can be very hard to get it right. But even though you might manage to get this right, or you pay someone to come and do it for you, the next problem is that you end up with grout. This is the white stuff between tiles, and unlike tiles, grout can flake, peel away and is porous. This makes it an ideal surface for bacteria, spores and germs to breed and spread, and since splashbacks are only inches from your food, this doesn't make it an ideal option for the kitchen.
There's another problem though besides these two, which are fairly well known and accepted. The third drawback of using tiles as a splashback in the kitchen is the fact that tiles don't really reflect the light. Tiles, even those which are fairly pale in colour, reflect relatively little light. Darker coloured tiles, including black tiles which are very popular, absorb most of the light, and this can make the whole kitchen feel smaller, darker and gloomier.
Coloured glass splashbacks offer advantages in all three of these cases, offering an easier, more convenient, healthier and more hygienic option which can completely transform the look and feel of your whole kitchen in ways which are quite impossible by any other material. Coloured glass splashbacks are made by either staining the glass completely from the front to the back, or simply by applying a coloured glass film to the reverse of the splashback. In either case the coloured glass takes on a stunning coloured hue, and because it's glass the light is free to pass through it, reflect off the back and be refracted through the glass. This results in the whole room feeling lighter and brighter, and depending on the colour you choose, you can create a real atmosphere.
For example, if you use red or amber coloured glass splashbacks you can make the whole room feel warm and cosy, with yellow or green glass splashbacks making the room feel fresh, summery and bright. Blue coloured splashbacks create a very fresh, clean and spring like feel, and there are plenty of other colours to experiment with. Even black splashbacks made from glass reflect far more light than tiles, because of the depth of the glass. Offering nowhere for germs and bacteria to hide, glass offers a real benefit in terms of cleaning and hygiene. A quick spray and a wipe is all it takes not only to clean up, but to do so at a deep level.
It's also worth pointing out that coloured glass splashbacks are made off site to measure, so there's no need to worry about cutting, fitting and managing to work round awkward corners or integrate holes for pipes. All this will be done, so that once the splashback is delivered, it can be fitted in minutes, offering a lifetime's good looks and hygiene. A kitchen fitted with coloured glass splashbacks offers advantages which are both practical, and unseen, both hygienic, and atmospheric, and whether you're looking for convenience, or to create a look and feel that will impress, the one thing which glass splashbacks don't need to be is as expensive as many people instinctively assume.
